RWTH Institute of Automatic Control

RWTH Institute of Automatic Control with its approximately 35 members of staff reviews a long history of theoretical and practical issues in automatic control. IRT was established in 1957; since 1.10.2001 Prof. Abel is head of IRT.

The activities of the IRT focus on the development and application of theoretical methods in automatic control. This is done by close collaboration within the university and industrial partners. The activities of IRT can be subdivided into two fields. First, IRT focuses on methods in automatic control including model-based predictive control, robust control, nonlinear control, system identification, rapid control prototyping and the analysis and synthesis of discrete systems. Second, the application of these methods is an important concern in the work of IRT.

Projects in the application areas automotive, rail, manufacturing engineering, power engineering, medical engineering and automation are carried out. Several lectures concerning different aspects of automatic control round off the activities of IRT.
